The active fire fighters train throughout the year.  They have in house trainings on Tuesday evenings and work on pumping/drafting skills, they maintain the fire apparatus and small equipment and other things as the need arises. 

They also attend HAZ MAT courses each year as required by the State.

Other specialized training courses are offered to the fire fighters throughout the year at the York County Fire School and HACC.  These course are numerous and widespread.  They include vehicle rescue, bus rescue, confined space, officer training, EVOC, First Responder and EMT Courses, First Aid and CPR with AED, and many, many more.  

Below are the courses and descriptions.

Basic Firefighter Classes

Introduction to Incident Command System, ICS-100

ICS 100, Introduction to the Incident Command System, introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

 

ICS-200 for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents

ICS 200 is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS). ICS-200 provides training on and resources for personnel who are likely to assume a supervisory position within the ICS. 

 

IS-700.A: National Incident Management System (NIMS) An Introduction

This course introduces and overviews the National Incident Management System (NIMS). NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private-sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents.

 

IS-800.B: National Response Framework, An Introduction

The course introduces participants to the concepts and principles of the National Response Framework.

 

Introduction to the Fire Service

Course Description:

The goal of this program is to equip entry level firefighters with basic knowledge, skills, and abilities to begin their fire service career. Through classroom sessions and practical fieldwork, the recruit/new firefighter will learn how to function safely and effectively as a support member of a fire suppression organization. This course is designed to introduce new firefighters to basic information including an overview of the fire service, fire service organization, firefighter safety, personal protective equipment and terrorism awareness. This is the first of four courses in the curriculum.

 

Fire Ground Support

Course Description:

The goal of this course is to introduce entry level firefighters to the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to fire ground and hazardous materials emergency scene operations. This course will introduce new firefighters to fire ground operations including fire behavior, fire extinguishers, water supply, fire hose, ropes, and hazardous materials. This is the second of four courses in the curriculum.

 

Exterior Firefighter

Course Description:

This course is designed to introduce new firefighters to exterior fire ground operations including ladders, forcible entry, fire behavior, fire extinguishers, SCBA, fire streams, hose line advancement, and utility control. This is the third of four courses in the curriculum.

 

Entry Level Interior Firefighter

Course Description:

This course is designed to introduce new firefighters to interior fire ground operations, SCBA, rescue, ventilation, fire suppression, salvage, protective systems, and firefighter survival. This is the fourth of four courses in the curriculum.


 

First Aid / CPR / AED or EMT

Course Description:

This course is designed for first responders. It represents a key strategy for improving the first two links in the chain of survival; early access to 911 and early CPR. The course covers recognition of a heart attack and stroke, EMS system activation, use of recovery position, rescue breathing, management of airway obstruction and the use of barrier devices. This course also contains three core modules: general principles, medical emergencies and injury emergencies, plus an optional module on environment emergencies.

 

Hazardous Materials Awareness

Course Description:

This course will provide instruction in the basic skills of identifying hazardous material problems in a community. The student will learn to recognize the presence of hazardous materials and identify hazardous materials, as well as learn the associated hazard characteristics.

 

Hazardous Materials Operations

Course Description:

The goal of this program is to provide the First Responder with the training needed to comply with NFPA 472, Chapter 5 Competencies for the First Responder at the Operational Level and 29 CFR 1910.120, OSHA's Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) First Responder Operations Level. This program is designed to give the first responder the necessary skills to handle hazardous materials emergencies.

 

Firefighter I Certification Test

Basic Vehicle Rescue - Awareness:
This course is intended for personnel who need to have an awareness of vehicle rescue operations and how to assist a rescue company at a rescue scene.
 

Basic Vehicle Rescue - Operations:
This course is intended for personnel who have already taken BVR-Awareness course in the past. This course teaches the student the use of hand tools in vehicle rescue operations and how to access and package the patient at the accident scene. Post rescue operations are also discussed.
 

Basic Vehicle Rescue - Technician:
This course is intended for personnel who have already have taken BVR-Awareness and BVR-Operations courses in the past. This course gives the student the knowledge of power tool usage and disentanglement techniques. At the end of this course, the student will be able to take the written Basic Vehicle Rescue Technician certification test.
